By merging the Defence and Public Safety business units into one strategic business unit Security Communication, Ascom is responding to the changes that are emerging in the public safety market segment.

The tasks of military and civil security organizations, rescue services and infrastructure operators are undergoing a major transformation. Today, joint operations are required in emergency situations, natural disasters and at large festivities or events. In addition, people increasingly feel the need for security due to national emigration, acts of terrorism and other phenomena, which has to be taken fully into account. The protection of people and property, public areas and key installations, are a top priority. Members of the armed forces, the police, fire services and rescue services need equipment that keeps pace with these requirements. That means a demand for interoperable communication systems that enable various groups serving on a mission to communicate with one another, and provide integrated command and control facilities for the officers-in-charge.

This market development opens a very attractive business potential for Security Solutions. The division’s existing know-how in the area of installed systems and the flexible, scalable products of the openAccess® und Ascom openTas families will enable Security Solutions to combine proven and new technologies to create customized solutions.

The market addressed by Security Solutions in the public safety segment is currently CHF 1.5 billion in size and growing by 5 - 7% year on year. The Security Communication business unit is well positioned overall to expand its existing market share.
