Zug BLS

The vehicle platform is the communication node on rail-mounted vehicles. It co-ordinates and controls the applications installed on-board trains such as video monitoring, passenger information systems, vehicle positioning and passenger count installations, and is able to transmit data from these installations to a main control centre. Future applications on the trains can easily be linked up to the vehicle platform. The data between the trains (decentralised) and the main control centre is transmitted in encrypted form via GSM/GPRS or WLAN.

The decentralised vehicle platform on the trains combines video monitoring, the automatic passenger count system and the customer information system using a standardised IT platform. This means the applications are able to share the communication resources (GSM, GPS, W-LAN) and the system management (positioning, software distribution, status reports, etc.).

More than 500 vehicle platforms supplied by ascom are currently in use by the Swiss Federal Railways
