Challenge

In recent years the demands of train passengers for up-to-date information and better communication facilities when travelling have increased sharply. Nowadays many passengers demand or expect real-time information on their current journey and also internet access. Video monitoring and help points on board the trains themselves also give passengers a greater sense of security when travelling late at night. These requirements are made possible by communication technologies with a greater bandwidth in trains, trams and other means of transport. The challenge for Ascom was to install IP-based communication via broadband connection across the conventional couplings and existing cable infrastructures on trains.

Solution

Powerline technology offers new solutions for the installation of IP-based communication applications in trains. Individual coaches or rafts of coaches can be connected with one another with an Ethernet connection using the UIC lines or existing cable infrastructure. Ascom developed this technology to set up broadband communication connections within a complete train set. As this solution makes use of the existing cable infrastructure in the coaches it offers an attractive way of converting, upgrading or retrofitting existing vehicle fleets with modern, IP-based communication solutions.

The main advantage is a fast and reliable IP connection for modern communication equipment on trains. With Powerline technology IP-based systems can be installed at optimum cost on both existing and new trains.
