Ascom Security Solutions to deliver communication systems for the Gotthard Base Tunnel

Ascom Security Solutions has been awarded the contract to deliver the operational communication system for the Gotthard Base Tunnel. The contract volume amounts to CHF 3.6 million.

In line with its strategic focus on mission-critical communication, Ascom Security Solutions offers communication concepts tailored to address particularly challenging situations. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, the constructor of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, has assigned the "Gotthard Base Tunnel Railway Technology" project to the Swiss Transtec Gotthard Consortium. As a specialist in secure communications, Ascom Security Solutions has been contracted to deliver an operational communication system that substantially enhances the safety of rail personnel and passengers even in critical situations.

Thanks to the 400-plus emergency call points installed along the tracks, rail operators and passengers can rely on end-to-end support in emergencies. At the same time the dispatcher can reach all emergency exits in the tunnel's safety niches over loudspeaker from his workstation, and forward important instructions to personnel and passengers.

To guarantee maximum reliability and availability, Ascom will install a redundant architecture. The IP system, based on Ascom's openAccessÒ platform, is also highly flexible in terms of upgrading and scalability.
