INDEPENDENT LIVING

All of us are disabled in some way. We make use of devices, and accept other people’s help, to compensate for our defects. We use phones, we wear clothes, we rely on instructions, and we ask directions. And since most of us share these handicaps, they don’t lessen our sense of self-sufficiency and self-worth.

For some of us, though, it’s a challenge to accomplish things that others do easily. Some of us have to depend on others for our safety, or our mobility—even our everyday needs. In conditions like these, physical independence comes to mean not only a decent quality of life, but the same self-respect that the rest of us take for granted.
